I am married, with one child (husband Larry and Daughter Katherine "KD"). We live in Northern California. Both Larry and I work for the Forest Service and have for over 25 years. KD is 11. I' ve attached a picture of KD and me from this past Christmas. We each have a bird on our shoulder! Look for a white bird on KD's left shoulder, the gray bird is on me. (Jewel and Cricket). Paul Sundberg

Oooh ... where to begin ... since '72?

After graduation, I went to live with my mother's brother, a college basketball coach, and his family in Pella, Iowa, a Dutch immigrant community with a great college. After that, I attended Wheaton College in the Chicago suburbs from 1975-79, graduating with a Bachelor's in French. (Ms. Frey had more impact that she knew!) After a brief fling training to be a linguist-missionary with SIL (the Summer Institute of Linguistics) in '79 and '80, I decided the lifestyle definitely did not fit me, and I went into TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language), getting an MS in Linguistics at Georgetown University in '84, where I also took Classical (Modern Standard) Arabic. I'm pretty good at it now - no thanks to Aramco schools!

My dream was immediately to get a plum EFL job back in the Middle East and even was flown down to Houston for an interview with a university in Hofuf in 1985, but the position was, so they say, cut due to budget problems (either that or they needed a face-saving way to protect Hofuf from my teaching skills!) Since my parents by that time had retired to the LA area, I went to spend what I thought would be 3-6 months with them while applying for jobs in the Arab world - home, in a sense.

After September arrived and I had still found nothing I really wanted, I figured I'd better look for work where I was and taught ESL in Pasadena and Burbank until 1988, when I got a job with the Saudi Navy in Dammam (!) for a year. It was great to be back near Dhahran and to be able to get into "camp" once and a while to see old family friends. That job served as a stepping stone to a much better position at American University Cairo, where I taught freshman comp to the very ruling-class Arab kids that attended AUC from Egypt, the gulf ,and elsewhere. Those were a great 4 years, not well paid exactly, but professionally very beneficial and personally enriching. I also got very involved with All Saints Cathedral (Anglican) there, eventually serving as congregational liaison to the Joint Refugee Ministry, which helps displaced people from the Horn of Africa, mainly southern Sudan, who have fled the brutal civil war these past 20 years.

I finally thought I'd better go back for that PhD I'd been planning before I got too old, so I came to the University of Illinois in 1993 to begin my doctoral work. I took a year off in '95 to earn some money teaching EFL for Aramco in Jeddah, then came back and am now - finally! - in the final stages (ABD) of a PhD in Educational Psychology with a specialization in Computer- Assisted Language Learning (CALL). I hope to finish up by the end of 2003 or May 2004.

As some of you may already be aware, my mother (Marianne Sundberg) passed away last August after battling melanoma for quite a few years. Now it looks like Dad (Art) might not last out this year. Two blows within a year. My sister Ann and I are gearing up for that psychologically. And we're realizing we have a huge extended family in the ex-Aramcon community, which we've relied on too little these past years.

Hobbies have included travel (I've been to Brazil twice now), Brazilian music, Portuguese, serving as airshifter (DJ) for a world beat program on our local radio station here in Champaign, and piano. (I'm afraid my musical skills have declined a lot since I've been in Illinois.) I'm also a huge news junkie. In fact, I've had to unplug my TV to make any progress on my dissertation this semester!

For more info on my last couple of decades, you might also want to check out my homepage:

I do intend to be at this year's Brat Reunion, so see all of you there, I hope!

Paul

Addendum (May 2005): I finally completed my 11-year doctoral program in Educational Psychology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, including receiving a certificate in Second Language Acquisition and Teacher Education (SLATE). I moved back to the old Sundberg heartland, Los Angeles, early in 2005 and am conducting a job search in computers and foreign-language instructional design.
